'A JETTY THAT'S A TASTE OF PURE SOUTH PACIFIC' Guests arriving at Vanuatu's adults-only Iririki Island Resort in Port Vila will soon find themselves stepping ashore into what everyone mind-pictures as the true South Pacific... an arrival jetty complete with a thatch-roofed shelter almost out of Hollywood to provide cover from sun or rain the moment they step off the island's free round-the-clock ferry service. The existing jetty is being substantially widened to 3.2 metres to give more space for guests, as well as the island's golf buggies that are used for transporting luggage, groups using the resort's meeting and convention facilities, and those guests requiring assistance to Reception. "The new jetty will be more user-friendly than the existing structure and the thatch shelter will provide both an aesthetic and practical use for arriving and departing guests," said General Manager, Bryan Death. "It blends perfectly with our lush tropical gardens and 'South Pacific' atmosphere. "And we plan to add a new Welcoming Fare at the land end of the jetty for guests to sort luggage before going to Reception, as well we're looking at building a Late Night Reception and Check-in facility right at the jetty for those arriving or departing on late flights," Mr Death said. The new jetty and shelter are scheduled for completion by the end of April. [Source: Iririki Island Resort, 28 January 2003] WHAT'S HAPPENING IN VANUATU ! October 1 - 4: TOKA Festival, Tanna Island. And most unusually the community involved has decided to open it to a small number of international visitors. The ceremony, called the Naluan, is staged in the northern part of the island of Ambrym. Chief Meleun Nimber Bangdor Gilbert, after 57 years as the area's tribal custom chief, is now handing over this role to his sons, and the unique ceremony will be held from 23rd to 27th October.
