This years event was hosted by the Tongan Surfing Association at Ha'atafu Beach Surf Resort on the main island of Tonga during 14 – 20 April. The Maori team have now won the Oceania Teams Title 3 times namely 1998, 2000, 2001. "Competition was tough" said team manager Steve Ria (Rongowhakaata) "some of our team had to surf through the heats to make the finals. We didn't have it all our own way as the standard of competition from the other teams was very high and the quality of the waves meant that judging was extremely close. In the end we won 2 of the 3 division and all of our team made the finals which gave us the cup for the 3rd time" said Mr Ria. (Source: 2001 World Championship Tour) |
