GREAT NEWS FOR UEPI GUESTS You can now fly into Honiara and out to Uepi on the SAME DAY; no stopover for the night in Honiara. Thanks to Solomon Airlines new schedule - effective from Sept 1 - guests can fly into Honiara from Brisbane on a Thursday and transfer to Seghe that afternoon. You arrive in Marovo Lagoon in time for a warm welcome from Uepi managers and their team, watch the spectacular sunset with an aperitif followed by a wonderful evening meal. Your holiday now begins sooner and the resultant restorative effects are quicker to kick in! The outward journey is just as easy with a connecting flight straight through to Brisbane on Tuesdays. (Source: Uepi Island Resort, September 2002) SAIL THE SOLOMONS YACHT RACE - (Brisbane to Gizo) The 'Sail to Solomons Yacht Race' started on 2nd June from Brisbane with the first yacht crossing the finishing in Gizo on 10th June beating the old record by 13 hours, 31 minutes and 30 seconds. A total of seven yachts all together participated in the Yacht Race. The Yacht Race is one of the events Solomon Islands hosts in its attempt to restore confidence within its tourism industry and the country's reputation in overseas tourism markets. The next years Yacht Race is planned for June 2002 and preparations are underway to hosting the race. (Source: Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau, June 2001) Tourists are back in the Solomons !! Tourist arrivals at the Solomon Islands Western Province capital Gizo are on the increase. Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation in Gizo quoted the Western province's tourism officer, Eddie Daga, as saying that in the first week of January 30 tourists, mainly divers, arrived in Gizo. He said this is a good sign since hardly anyone visited the province during the height of the ethnic conflict back on Guadalcanal. Before the conflict, picturesque Gizo was a growing tourism center for Western Province, and was attracting an increasing number of divers. Both Solomon Airlines and the Solomon Islands tourism industry are now working to rebuild the country's tourism industry following the Townsville Peace Agreement, which ended the Guadalcanal conflict. Solomon Airlines has already restored most of its international and domestic air services. (Source: SPTO January 2001) MAROVO LAGOON ECO-LODGE ASSOCIATION Ten Eco-lodge operators in Western Province's Marovo Lagoon have put their heads together to form an association to work together, improve standards and talk with one voice when it comes to promotions and marketing. The first project will be a classification exercise to grade the accommodation and improve standards where it is called for.
