New Caledonia at the largest European water-sports exhibition New Caledonia participates as the special guest in the 'Grand Pavois' exhibition, taking place in La Rochelle (French Atlantic coast) from 18th to 23rd September. It is an outstanding opportunity for promotion of the New Caledonia destination. This exhibition usually attracts some 130,000 visitors and 350 journalists. New Caledonia boasts a 1000-square-metre exhibition surface, a business centre and a gourmet restaurant. (Source: ADECAL News Letter, April-May-June 2002) Japanese couple rehearses underwater wedding off Noumea Masa and Yumi were the first two Japanese visitors to use a newly opened underwater facility, the Divescope, in Nouméa, New Caledonia. The ceremony took place with two other occupants, a priest and a witness, in the small capsule. The bride and the groom were both dressed in white. New Caledonia is one of Japan's favorite South Pacific tourist destinations and a significant revenue earner for the local tourism industry, which thrives on honeymoon packages. Local operators hope to lure more tourists, especially from Japan, Australia and New Zealand, with the "underwater wedding" feature. The Divescope was officially opened to public earlier this month in the lagoon off the capital, Nouméa, at a depth of 26 feet. It is a Plexiglas and steel module positioned at a stable depth underwater and can accommodate up to six adults for a half hour. (Source: Pacific Islands Report, via SPTO, May 2001) Outrigger sets sail for New Caledonia New Caledonia will join Outrigger's Pacific when the Kuendu Beach Resort completes a two-year, $7.8m redevelopment in 2003 and assumes the Outrigger name. This unique resort currently comprises 26 luxury bungalows, including 6 over-water units, along with restaurants and conference facilities. On completion of the redevelopment, the resort will offer 20 additional over-water bungalows, as well as new restaurants, a reception area and conference center. New recreation facilities will include two swimming pools, waterslides, and a protected area in Kuendu Bay.
