NIUE is located at latitude 19 degrees South and Longitude 169 degrees West. Local time is 11 hours GMT. Sometimes known as 'the Rock', Niue's Land Area is 259 sq km and its coastline is 64 kilometres. The island is an emerged limestone atoll with former reef and lagoon uplifted to about 60m above sea level. Some parts of the coastline are deeply cut by wave action and there are 'swimming pools' created by this erosive action. A coral reef occurs intermittently along the coastline which is honeycombed by caves, chasms, and blowholes. There are some dramatic ocean views from the clifftops. Humpback whales may be seen passing Niue (seasonal), and there are also turtles and pods of dolphins. |
