THINGS TO SEE AND DO Pohnpei is the largest and tallest island in the FSM. More than 40 rivers descend from the peaks to feed the lush rain forest. There are many waterfalls - some quite spectacular ... and great for cooling off after a hike through the hills! Activities include scuba diving (hard and soft corals, dropoffs, sea anemones, and gorgonian fans), and fishing. Sharks, sea turtles and manta rays are seen at many sites around Pohnpei. The jagged coastline (mostly mangrove), intersected by many channels which feed an inner lagoon have resulted in one of the most varied marine environments in Micronesia. Other activities - take a short boat trip to the neighboring atolls of Ant and Pakin to enjoy a pure paradise unspoiled and pristine diving. Or watch the famous and energetic dances, or the preparation of sakau - a kava-like traditional drink. There are also the mysterious Nan Madol ruins. Called the Venice of the Pacific, this manmade city with ocean-filled channels once housed a thriving, royal civilization. Huge basalt pillars form the residences of kings and sorcerers. These remnants of an ancient Pohnpeian civilization are still being studied and explored. They can be visited as part of an overall nature tour or studied in depth all day with one of Pohnpei's knowledgeable history guides. See the main Micronesia map for a list of yacht charters and cruises available in the Federated States of Micronesia. |
