THINGS TO SEE AND DO Chuuk consists of a huge atoll, whose outer barrier reef consists of idyllic sand spits dotted with coconut palsm, and whose central lagoon is dotted with many high islands rising into the blue skies. Scuba diving is one of the main tourist activities - the large, shallow Truk Lagoon being home to more than 50 shipwrecks from WWII. Hard and soft corals attract divers worldwide. Japanese lighthouses - from the war era - may be found high atop the lagoon's finest viewpoints and may be accessible by hiking or driving. Guides are available to show you old runways, command centers, gun emplacements, cave networks, hospitals and libraries. Other activities include ocean kayaking - an excellent way to enjoy the many islands of Chuuk. During the tradewind season, one may also enjoy windsurfing and sailing in the lagoon passes. The local people of Chuuk are engaged in the subsistence activities of fishing, weaving and gardening. Women may often be seen waist deep in the mangroves hunting for a special delicacy while men walk the reefs by torchlight at night looking for baby octopus. Boat making is another local craft, and local carvers are famous for the warrior masks and busts they create from beautiful local timbers. See the main Micronesia map for a list of yacht charters and cruises available in the Federated States of Micronesia. |
