SURFING COMPETITION IN SUVA The Fiji Surfing Association hosted the first Wai Tui Cup competition in Suva early this month. The competition, which has been labelled a success by the organisers, is part of a new competition series that allows surfers to test their skills for selection for the Oceania Cup and 2003 South Pacific Games. Forty local surfers from Suva, Tavarua Island Resort, Kulukulu, Sigatoka, Nadi and Vatukoula participated in the event. (Source: Fiji Visitors Bureau, February 2002) SURFING - FIJI ISLANDS Southerlies provide Fiji with Surf for most of the year. These cold fronts occur year round, though they're most frequent in the dry season, which occurs from March to October. The tropical cyclones which pass through northern Australia between November and February also produce some excellent waves in Fiji. Nagigia Island - 2 rights "king kong", left tube and a tow-in bombora. Cloudbreak - world famous left barrel. Swimming Pools - a grinding right-hander. Wilkes Pass - A long hollow right reef break. Namotu Island - A left and a hollow right reef break. Momi Bay Lighthouse - A right at the lighthouse offshore of Momi Bay. Natendola - a left point break at a beautiful white sand beach. Sigatoka Rivermouth - rights and left peak in front of a rivermouth. Hideaway - a hollow right off small pass in the reef. Roxy Fiji Surf Jam - FIJI ISLANDS Tavarua Island, Fiji (Saturday, April 28, 2001). The Roxy Fiji Surf Jam officially commenced today with a traditional Kava ceremony attended by the world's top 15 rated women surfers, eight wildcard hopefuls, as well as representatives from Quiksilver Roxy, Tavarua Island staff, and neighboring locals from Nambula village.
