Friendly Bungalows offers a unique Melanesian holiday adventure experience. Located about 1.5 hours drive from Tanna airport, it has an absolute beach location and is close to Mt Yasur volcano, the main tourist attraction of the island.
Facilities are basic, but the property offers a true cultural Melanesian holiday destination.
Friendly Bungalows are located at Lowelkas Cove on Tanna Island. Flights to Tanna from Port Vila are available via Air Vanuatu. It takes about 1.5 hours drive from the Tanna airport to Friendly Bungalows, who provide a transfer service since there is no public transport option.
Guest rooms have basic facilities and are constructed of local materials including natangora and coconut thatch, timber and bamboo. There are mosquito nets, gas hot water, a verandah and hammock. The 1 bedroom bungalow has a double bed and is suitable for 2 adults and children. The 2 bedroom bungalow has a double bed and 2 single beds and can accommodation 4 adults and children.
There is a restaurant and bar; the open dining area has a sand floor. Continental breakfast is included in the tariff and includes cooked items such as pancakes, omelettes and french toast. Tea and coffee. Lunch and dinner are prepared to order. Picnic lunches can be arranged if you wish. Meals are well-priced and include fresh local produce. If you are travelling with children, you may like to bring some snacks with you as food items are limited.
The main focus for guests at Friendly Bungalows is the Mt Yasur volcano, which is located about 30 minutes drive away. The tour departs at 4pm and returns around 9pm - this covers sunset and the dramatic eruptions that are spectacular against the night sky. Tour guide and transport is included. Since Mt Yasur is a live volcano, visits are at guests’ own risk.
Other tourist spots include hot mineral springs, custom villages, waterfalls in the rainforest, Port Resolution and the John Frum Cult Village.
