Kadavu, Fiji’s fourth largest island situated 100km south of the main island Viti Levu is one of the few remaining undeveloped islands in Fiji today. Having maintained its strong cultural values the general population leads fairly subsistent lifestyles in sleepy coastal villages dwarfed by mountainous jungles and waterfalls plummeting from the hilltops. The islands deeply indented bays, fringed by coral reefs and mangrove forest provide habitat to a host of birds including the endemic Kadavu musk parrot. Forest openings reveal lizards basking on rocks, and butterflies spiraling skyward in a lazy dance.
The striking Astrolabe Reef and the Kadavu group of islands have both been created by past volcanic activity and tectonic movements. The Matava Resort is right on the doorstep of this magnificent living organism, home to an abundance of marine life unequalled in Fiji. Divers and snorkellers can expect a diversity of fish life and corals of every conceivable colour and hue.
Traditional thatched Fijian ’bures’ with additional timber polished floors, louver windows, timber beds and private decks are nestled in the rainforest to offer privacy, comfort and superb ocean views. Oceanview bures offer spectacular panoramas of The Great Astrolabe Reef and surrounding offshore islands. Waterfront bures are nestled along the foreshore, immersed in beautiful tropical gardens and surrounded by lush rainforest.
Bathroom facilities and showers are available as private facilities in most bures. There are shared facilities for three bures. Solar power provides the lighting and gas heats the water in each private facility bure.
Dining & Entertainment
Meals at Matava are an imaginative blend of local and international cuisine. Scrumptious lovo feasts, a traditional Fijian meal cooked over hot stones in the ground, are held once a week, usually accompanied by a kava session. We cater for vegetarians and those with special dietary requirements.

The Great Astrolabe Reef, long regarded as a world-class scuba diving destination, also provides perfect uncrowded and hassle-free surfing. There are three passages (breaks in the reef) that produce long barreling waves anywhere from 2-12 feet. Each passage offers varied conditions that will suit all styles, levels and egos. Intermediate to advanced surfing skills are required. The reef breaks are dangerous and only work in certain weather conditions. The Fiji trades (July - October) can blow out the waves for days at a time. The surf is more reliable in the Summer months.

NACOMOTO PASSAGE: This passage includes "Eagle Rock" and "Cabbage Patch". Eagle Rock is named after a school of eagle rays, which fly around the bommie at the mouth of this passage. The dive also typically hosts reef sharks, barracuda and turtles. Cabbage Patch is home to one of the biggest cabbage coral patches a diver is ever likely to see. Reef sharks, hump head wrasse and colourful schools of reef fish are commonly seen on this relaxing dive. The passage is a marine reserve.
SOSO PASSAGE: Home to "Golden Chimney" and "Coral Wonderland". The Golden Chimney is a large coral structure completely covered in golden soft corals, which when blooming light up the entire area. Gorgonian fans, moray eels, reef sharks, garden eels are other highlights of this dive. Coral Wonderland combines the best of wall, drift and relaxed coral watching. The dive starts deep with some very large fan corals on the edge of a very deep drop off. At the end of the wall, large schools of barracuda often hang out along with a grey reef shark or two. The last part of the dive is spent in shallower coral gardens which go on and on with reef fish schooling in large numbers.
MANTA REEF: A very special dive and one of the few places in the world where manta rays can be seen regularly. You’ll be taken by the size and graze of these beautiful creatures as they circle inquisitively. Though almost within touching distance all you’ll do is stand back in awe. Even without these magnificent creatures, the reef itself is outstanding in its quality and diversity of fish life. If you see mantas as well, this dive will always rank amongst the best you will ever do.
