YACHTING REGATTA IN 'SAIL' OF THE CENTURY AT MUSKET COVE - Fiji The South Pacific's premier regatta for international cruising yachts takes place at Musket Cove Island Resort between Friday September 5 to Saturday September 13. More than 100 boats from around the world will gather at Musket Cove for a week of yacht races and other yachting activities before leaving for Port Vila. (Source: Fiji Visitors Bureau, August 2003) FIJI REGATTA ATTRACTS RECORD YACHT ENTRIES - Fiji A record 67 yachts have entered the Musket Cove Resort annual regatta week at the Musket Cove Resort and yacht club on September 6-14. The regatta week includes a 16 kilometre Pirate's day race to nearby Beachcomber Island, the 19 kilometre round Malolo island race, the Orams Marine trophy race and a Hobie Cat challenge. Fun events include the 'live figurehead' and 'briefest bikini' competitions. Musket Cove is on the edge of Malolo island lagoon in the Mamanucas. Enquiries to Josephine Smith at Musket Cove Fiji Resort (Source: Fiji Visitors Bureau, September 2002) FIJI SCHOONER 'TUI TAI' MOVES NORTH - Fiji The three-masted schooner Tui Tai will now operate new four and three night adventure cruises in Fiji's northern and north-eastern islands from the 1st July, 2002. The 39-metre Tui Tai is owned and operated by Beachcomber Island Resort and Cruises and will be based in Savusavu on Fiji's second largest island, Vanua Levu. The Tui Tai’s forward lounge now has 28 bunks in dormitory-style accommodation, a concept pioneered by the company's owner, Mr. Dan Costello, at Beachcomber Island Resort. Bathrooms and other facilities have been refurbished and the schooner will carry 30 mountain bikes, kayaks and a variety of snorkling equipment in her new role. Tui Tai adventure cruises will start in Savusavu and will visit the islands of Qamea and Taveuni, the island lagoon of Wai Lagi Lala and the island of Yanuyanu in the Lau group of islands. The half-day cruise on board the luxurious MV Lady Geraldine to the Mystery Island now ensures Captain Cook Cruises cater for all holiday options. The Mystery Island cruise departs Denarau Marina at noon and returns at 5pm. Other options offered by Captain Cook Cruises include a day trip on board the tall ship Ra Marama to seven night cruises aboard the luxury MV Reef Escape. Sailing Safaris are also offered on board the SS Spirit of the Pacific and Starlight Dinner Cruises on the Lady Geraldine. (Source: Fiji Visitors Bureau, February 2002) TOURISTS GALORE IN SAMOA - Samoa Apia's streets were jammed last week with tourists from the cruise ship Sea Bourn Son, which brought 550 tourists to Samoa. The five star luxury liner began its around the world journey in San Francisco. The South Pacific leg of its journey will cover Hawaii, Samoa, Fiji, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia. It was the vessel's third visit to Samoa. According to vessel spokesperson Captain Perkins, Samoa could be in for a surprise this year, the world's largest cruise ship Queen Elizabeth II could be making a trip to Samoa later this year. Maps, and Places to stay in Samoa (Source: Samoa Observer Online via SPTO, January 2002) WIND SONG SAILS TAHITI WATERS - French Polynesia An agreement has been signed for the luxury cruise ship Wind Song to operate weekly cruises from Papeete until December next year. President Gaston Flosse and the senior vice-president of Windstar Sail Cruises Limited signed an agreement for cruises from Papeete to Huahine, Raiatea, Bora Bora and Moorea. The Wind Song cruised the islands of French Polynesia from July 1987 until December 1997. The ship has 75 luxury cabins. It was also agreed that the Wind Surf (the renovated former Club Med 1) would replace the Wind Song after 19 months. The Wind Surf has greater passenger capacity, it can accommodate up to 308 passengers. This includes the Auckland to Musket Cove Cruising Rally to be held in early May 2002, organised by New Zealand's Ponsonby Cruising Club in conjunction with MCYC. Additionally MCYC has set its annual Fiji Regatta Week to take place from September 6 – 14 with the Musket Cove to Port Vila Rally to begin September 14. MCYC is part of Musket Cove Resort. (Source: Fiji Visitors Bureau, December 2001) FIJI'S TOURISM INDUSTRY TO RECEIVE BOOST FROM CRUISE SHIPS - FIJI Fiji's tourism industry is set to boost with the return of cruise ships to the country expected to bring in 10,000 tourists during the first five months of next year. The tourists will be on board 22 cruise ships scheduled to visit the country from January to May 2002. They are mainly from the United States, Germany and Australia. Two cruise ships, namely the Albatross and the Astor, will visit Savusavu on the northern island of Vanua Levu and parts of Viti Levu in February. Other cruise ships will visit island resorts in the central and southern divisions. The local agency, Pacific Shipping, said the cruise ships will spend at least a day in each port before departure. (Source: Radio Australia, via SPTO, November 2001) TWO NEW QUAYS FOR CRUISE SHIPS - TAHITI Since August 13th, the Papeete port authority has started building two new quays for cruise ships coming to Tahiti. The new equipments will cost US$23 million. The new 200m long and 30m large quays will be located in the heart of Papeete. They will soon allow four more cruise ships to stay in Tahiti. Three cruise ships, the Paul Gauguin (320 passengers) and two ships from the 'Renaissance company' (each of one carrying 690 passengers), go each week from Papeete to the Leeward islands. Last year, cruise ships in French Polynesia had 85 421 customers and in the "cruise ship season", in January and February of each year, the Papeete harbour often seems too small. (Source: Tahiti Presse, via SPTO, August 2001) SAIL THE SOLOMONS YACHT RACE - (Brisbane to Gizo) The 'Sail to Solomons Yacht Race' started on 2nd June from Brisbane with the first yacht crossing the finishing in Gizo on 10th June beating the old record by 13 hours, 31 minutes and 30 seconds. A total of seven yachts all together participated in the Yacht Race. The Yacht Race is one of the events Solomon Islands hosts in its attempt to restore confidence within its tourism industry and the country's reputation in overseas tourism markets.
