New Spa Facility opens at Rumours in Rarotonga There is now a full SPA Facility on site at Rumours Luxury Villas & Spa in Rarotonga. The Rarotongan Beach Resort last week won the Best Resort of the Year Award for the whole South Pacific region. The voters were 150 travel industry professionals at a conference in Fiji. Managing director Tata Crocombe was delighted. The Miss South Pacific Pageant 2002 will be held in Rarotonga, Cook Islands from 23rd to 30th November. The theme for this year's pageant, 'Embraced ... Nesian Style' is intended to highlight the unity of the Pacific people as we endeavour to remain steadfast and continue to nurture our cultures, values and lifestyles: whether Polynesian, Micronesian or Melanesian. This year will see an upbeat and energetic approach to the Miss South Pacific, adding a little youthful Cook Islands flavour to complement the individual essences of the Pacific region. The northern atoll of Rakahanga is a proposed site for some experiments in hydroponic growing of fruits and vegetables. Low lying atolls suffer from poor soil and are particularly vulnerable to inclement weather. Rarotonga consultant Tom Wichman is investigating the possibilities of the northern group atolls using hydroponics to counter an infrequent service and expensive imports of vegetables.
