Air Vanuatu wants to open North for Tourism route Air Vanuatu wants to open up the country's biggest island, Espiritu Santo, in the north, as the second direct tourist destination. This follows the upgrading of Pekoa Airport, just outside the provincial centre of Luganville, making it possible for Air Vanuatu's Boeing 737 jet to fly in. Finance Minister Carlo said he was aware divers from Australia, for example, want to fly direct to Luganville. He added, "we have some of the best dive spots in the world in Luganville and tourists don't want to waste time getting off a plane in Port Vila and spending a night here then getting on another plane to fly to Luganville" Dive sites near Luganville include the world famous wreck of the 22,000-ton World War Two troop ship President Coolidge. There are already approximately 200 hotel beds in the Luganville area. Air Vanuatu chairperson Willie Reuben Abel said: "the hoteliers are ready to talk. They want to see Luganville as a separate tourism destination". Espiritu Santo, 145 kilometres long and 65 kilometres wide, was a major American base during World War Two. Pekoa Airport was developed from a wartime airfield. The airline is also looking at extending its services to Norsup on Malekula and to Santo. Negotiations are already underway for a further two flights per week to New Caledonia from Tanna. Air Services (Vanuatu) Limited now has an office at the domestic airport in Port Vila and at White Grass on Tanna to handle passengers and cargo. The airline is offering very competitive packages for locals and tourists. A runway and apron upgrade allows operation by aircraft of Boeing 767 size. Airports Vanuatu also manages Pekoa Airport, Espiritu Santo and White Grass Airport at Tanna. Pekoa's runway has just been strengthened to accept Boeing 737 or similar aircraft. (Source: South Pacific Aviation, via SPTO, July 2001)
