The order now positions the carrier as one of the world's largest low-fare airlines and also cements Virgin Blue as the operator of the youngest fleet of aircraft in the Asia Pacific region, if not globally. (Source: Virgin Blue, January 2003) BIG BUSINESS BREAKTHROUGH FOR VIRGIN BLUE A major bid to snatch a larger share of Australia's business travel market is being launched by Virgin Blue. The low-cost carrier is challenging Qantas and Regional Express by going in to the lucrative Sydney-Canberra route with a twice-daily service. That route was the only one of the country's top 20 corridors not served by the airline, said CEO Brett Godfrey, who urged the Canberra government to support Virgin. "Until now, the travel policy of most commonwealth departments has been to basically write Qantas an open check," he said. "Taxpayers expect the federal government to take advantage of the same sort of cost savings that true competition is bringing to the private sector." Flights start on April 28.
