VISITOR INFORMATION Airports The international airport of entry is Bauerfield, only 10 mins from Port Vila, and there are two other paved airports, including Santo. There are 32 unpaved airfields for small aeroplanes on outer islands. Ports Forari, Port Vila and Santo have official ports. Airport Tax There is a 2000 Vatu airport tax for international departures (about US$17) and 250 Vatu tax for domestic departures, with children under two exempted. Visas For stays not exceeding 30 days, visitors do not require a visa if they are nationals of Commonwealth countries, EU countries, Japan, Norway, Philippines, South Korea, Switzerland or the USA. Visas are only obtainable from the Immigration Department in Port Vila (PMB 014, Vila, Vanuatu), Tel: 22 354, Fax: 25 492. It takes about seven days to get a visa, which is then valid for four months. Goods and Services Taxes There is a 10% GST on hotel accommodation and restaurant meals. Tipping Tipping and bargaining are not encouraged. Clothing Ni-Vanuatu now wear modest western clothing, though a few of the more remote tribes still wear traditional garb. Traditional clothes are still used during ceremonies and vary from island to island. They are made from grass, leaves and woven pandanus leaves and decorated with leaves, feathers, flowers and other colourful accessories. Perhaps the most intriguing are the namba or pandanus leaf penis sheaths of the Malekula people. Electrical Appliances Electricity runs at 220-230 volts AC, and most hotels have the three-point plugs. Time Vanuatu is eleven hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, and 16 hours ahead of New York. Water Urban water, which is treated, is safe to drink, though it is recommended that bottled or boiled water be used in rural areas. Medical Facilities Vaccinations are not required unless the visitor is travelling from an epidemic area. However, anti-malarial precautions are recommended for visits to outer islands. Usual precautions should be made for protection against insects and sun-burn, and coral cuts should be treated immediately. There are hospital facilities in Port Vila and at Luganville on Espiritu Santo. You can also access medical advice and assistance over the internet through : http://www.doctorglobal.com |
