Samoa

Samoa is an archipelago of nine islands, five of them uninhabited.

There are two main large islands: the first is the undeveloped island of Savai'i, and the second is Upolu, the principal economic centre of the country. The total area of both islands is 2,831 square kilometres.

  • 240 volts / AC 50 cycles, but can be converted to 110 volts in most hotels. Power-points can accept three-pronged plugs as used in Australia and New Zealand.
  • Samoa is situated just to the east of the International Dateline and therefore lays claim to being the last country in the world to see the sunset of each day. It is 11 hours behind GMT.
  • The local currency is the Samoan dollar or Tala - it is tied to a basket of the currencies of its main trading partners. For the latest currency exchange rate, Currency Converter.
  • ANZ Bank and Westpac open Monday to Wednesday, 9am to 3pm, Thursday to Friday, 9am to 4pm. National Bank of Samoa opens Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm and Saturday 9am to 12pm. Banks offer money exchange facilities at the airport. Major hotels also offer money exchange facilities. The ANZ & Westpac have branches at Salelologa, Savaii.
  • There are at present 200 Eftpos outlets found throughout Upolu and Savaii for easy payment, which accept the follow cards - Visa, Master-card, Cirrus, Amex, JCB & Plus Cards and Access International Debit Card.
  • The capital of Samoa is Apia. It is situated on the northern coast of the main island of Upolu.
  • The main economic activities are agriculture, which forms the base of the economy, forestry, and tourism. Fishing is also a growing industry, as is a small manufacturing sector. The country's offshore financial services centre has over 1,000 companies registered. Foreign aid and repatriation of funds are also crucial to the economy.
  • The main roads which circumnavigate the two main islands are paved (sealed). Secondary, rural access roads remain unsealed.
