What to See and Do Gateway to this region is Mont Dore. Situated 10 km from Noumea, the community of the Mont Dore, named after the mountain that dominates it, stretches out over 643 sq km. The Mont d'Or (mountain of gold) or Goumba, where precious gold dust was discovered, has become the Mont Dore by analogy with the central massif of Auvergne, France. Chromium iron, nickel and cobalt have been minded here. The Blue River Park - situated on the road to Yaté, 60km from Noumea - is home to a natural forest reserve. The park stretches out over 9045 hectares and a large number of native plants and wildlife can be found there. Several camping areas have been set up, with open huts, tables, benches and toilets. The Madeleine waterfalls are situated near an old chromium mine - classified as a botanical reserve. The river splashes down amidst a magnificent natural landscape of bushes and small conifers. The falls get their name from the Anna-Madeleine mine which was exploited in the early 1900s. Picnic areas have been created on the esplanade above the falls. Open huts, tables and toilets are available. At the foot of the southern mountains, there is an artificial lake created by the hydroelectric dam of Yaté. The expanse of fresh water covers an area of 40 sq km, easily accessible to those fishing for the famous black bass. From the Prony pass, the panoramic views of the bay are exceptional. Captain of the frigate 'Le Prony', Jean Joseph de Brun named the bay after his ship when he discovered it in November 1854. Casy Island situated in Prony Bay is a natural reserve to the south of the mainland (south of Noumea). To be found here is mining scrubland, red earth, tropical forestland and turquoise lagoons. Discover also the remains of the orchard created in 1870 by two of the penitentiary's gardeners who supplied the forest encampments of the penitentiary. The hotel 'Le Crusoé' sits by the sea in a coconut plantation. Accommodation and water sports are available. You can get to Casy Island by plane or by boat. The Needle of Prony is a geological marvel - the only one of its kind in the world. It is a huge pyramid-shaped underwater formation several metres wide at its base and sitting on the sea bed approximately 38 metres deep. The needle rock of Prony is one of the three main places where thermal springs emerge in the region. Spectacular day or night dives. |
