You are here ... South Pacific » New Caledonia ![]() What to See and Do New Caledonia (total land mass of 19,000 sq km) is an archipelago in Melanesia. It stretches out over a vast zone (200 nautical miles zone) of about 1,450,000 sq km. The largest island of the archipelago, known as the 'Grande Terre' (the mainland). It extends to the north with the Belep islands and to the south with the Isle of Pines. It is a long strip of land 400 km long and 50 km wide. A vast mountainous area, 'la Chaîne Centrale' (the Central Range), divides the island from north to south. Th landscapes on either side of the range are distinctly different ... with wide plains and hills along the West Coast, and a more rugged coastline along the East Coast. To the east of the mainland are the Loyalty Islands. These consist of three large islands - Ouvéa, Lifou, Maré - plus a smaller island called Tiga. A few other outer islands include Walpole, Matthew, Hunter, the Chesterfields, Huon and Surprise islands. |
