THINGS TO SEE AND DO The clear, clean seas around Kosrae are home to healthy and diverse coral reefs, and scuba diving remains one of the biggest attractions for visitors. With more than 50 dive sites, each marked with a buoy to prevent improper anchoring, Kosrae's reefs remain pristine. Features are hard coral gardens to the east and steep drop-offs to the west. Marine life includes sharks, dogtooth tuna, and barracuda schools. Underwater visibility averages 100 feet or better. On the island itself, there are ancient ruins of the forefathers of the Kosraean people, together with World War II artifacts and cave systems. For those who enjoy hiking, don't miss the trip up to Mount Omar, past many waterfalls in the lush rainforest. Other activities include sea kayaking or try your hand at a native outrigger canoe! Kosrae is also famous for its dense mangrove forests - they are some of the most amazing to be found anywhere in the world. In some places they form a high jungle canopy and a myriad of animal and plant life flourish in the complicated ecosystems. There are some roads, though some villages (such as Walung) can only be reached by boat. See the main Micronesia map for a list of yacht charters and cruises available in the Federated States of Micronesia. |
